The English version is not ready yet but the structure is the same as the Portuguese version. So all the links are set for the Portuguese pages on http://www.cobrasbrasileiras.com.br/ .
- This Project is being planned to be expanded as required for a complete world database.
- Many of the photos used here (excepted noted) were "lented just for layout".
- All text will be written using Information mapping, Plain English structure for a better and faster understanding.
The BRAZILIAN SNAKES Project
A project with wide public health, medical and veterinary reach. In Portuguese and English, it is composed of a website, book, DVD, child book and photo exposition.
Objectives:
- Will be utilized for efficient and quick identification of vipers, snakes, spiders, centipedes, scorpions, caterpillars, bees, ants, wasps and as help in the initial measures for the handling of accidents with venomous animals.
The identification of the animal is of vital importance for the decision of the serum to be applied as well to the survival of the patient.
- A database with technical information and elaborate photographs, following a scientific methodology, made specially for identification. It is going to relate and differentiate venomous and non venomous animals, initially of the Brazilian fauna, with possible extent to the whole South America (as the Amazon Rainforest extents to Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana).
Brazil today have catalogued 366 species of snakes, of these are 56 venomous.
- Each animal will have his descriptive page with necessary information (example) for supply subsidies in vital and immediate decision-making, as well additional facts about habitat, habits, ways of preservation and cares in the residences.
See examples: Crotalus durissus terrificus ; Bothrops alternatus ; Bothrops jararaca ;
- Ecological. These animals are one of the main natural regulators of the population of rodents and insects and contribute to the prevention of diseases and epidemics. It is frightening to imagine the large quantity of such animals being killed by fear and ignorance. With the present demographic expansion the consequences of this in few years will be, at least, catastrophic!
One of the main goals of the Project is to find, through its Advisors, viable solutions for human coexistence with these animal. We think the solution is in education. Who knows does not fear!.
Currently we have many support letters that we received from the directors board of prominent Brazilian hospitals and authorities, showing their need in such tool to help save lives. As a growing country, Brazil still don't have those tools.
The worldwide. statistics involving accidents are scaring. WHO (World Health Organization) estimates about 5.4 millions of accidents every year. In Brazil about 100.000 yearly.
It is the 3rd cause of injury complains in the country. MÉDIA ANUAL DE AGRAVOS - SINAN — Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação (see statistics)
